At the request of some of our readers, discerning and literate bunch that you all are, commencing with the May 1, 2008 issue we began archiving the March Report in a form suitable for presentation. Be advised that some of the links to external sites on the archived pages will have gone dead. Morte. Kaputski. That being the case, archives will be deleted, or replaced with an image of the headline area only, as the page itself becomes useless (assuming that it wasn't to begin with, which may be presumptuous in and of itself).

Wall Street Meltdown Linked To 'Outsourcing' Of Regulation To Private Code

Patrick Thibodeau --Computerworld

As capability and power of the technology increased, so did the complexity of the investments, such as with mortgage securities. Regulator confidence increased in these tools so much so that the SEC made a fundamental change in how to regulate financial services. On April, 28, 2004, the SEC -- at the insistence of financial services firms -- loosened its capital rules, agreeing to rely on financial services' computer models in assessing risk. ...

William Glaberson -- New York Times

The order, from a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, made clear that it was intended to give the appeals court time to review the government's request for a longer stay of the order from a federal district court judge in Washington, Ricardo M. Urbina. The troops were targeting a suspected al-Qaida in Iraq foreign facilitator in the area when a man confronted the group, officials said. Does Ahmadinejad Speak For Iran?

Adam Zagorin -- Time Magazine

This is an interview conducted by Adam Zagorin with Hooman Majd, author of "The Ayatollah Begs to Differ." Zagorin has an unusual background: His father had been a diplomat for the Shah of Iran, and his family fled the country to escape the Islamic revolution. His grandfather, however, was a noted Ayatollah, and taught some of Iran's leading clerics. Majd, who became a U.S. citizen a decade-and-a-half ago, has been a frequent visitor to Tehran in recent years; he knows and has written widely about the country and its leadership. (He recently served as a translator for a U.N. address by President Mahmoud Ahmedinajad.) ...

Author Sees London Through The Eyes Of His Teenage Daughter And A Century-Old Guidebook

Tom Blass -- New Statesman

Audio AND TEXT.  Twelve years ago in Berlin I picked up - of all the things to pick up in Berlin - an ancient travel guide to London, replete with advertisements for corset stays, temperance hotels and liver pills. The Sarah Jane Adventures: Interview With Elisabeth Sladen

Stephen Cass -- Discover Magazine

Sarah Jane Smith is one of the most enduring figures in the Doctor Who universe, appearing as a regular companion to two incarnations of the Doctor (Jon Pertee's third Doctor and Tom Baker's fourth Doctor) between 1973 and '76 and occasionally popping up ever since. The character currently has her own spin-off show, The Sarah Jane Adventures that is nominally intended for children. BBC America has just released the first season of The Sarah Jane Adventures - The Complete First Season on DVD (look for Science Not Fiction's review tomorrow), and so I got to talk to the woman behind Sarah Jane, actress Elisabeth Sladen, about playing such a popular character and other things Who ...

Mission Statement

The aim of the March Report is to provide you with information on all sides of the important issues of the day. To the best of our ability, we will not skew our coverage to the left, right or center. We say "to the best of our ability" because, now matter how hard someone tries, absolute objectivity is impossible.

For example (and in our opinion), a certain cable news outlet genuinely tries to be "Fair and Balanced," yet it is indisputable that their coverage skews to the right. Others' coverage skews to the left. Does this imply some grand conspiracy? NO! It simply means that, despite their good faith attempt to be balanced, their deeply held convictions cannot help but seep through.

We all analyze the information presented to us through the filter of our own lifetime of experiences. A liberal, a conservative, a libertarian and a socialist could, in good faith, objectively analyze a series of news stories on a given issue, and arrive at four different opinions; and, they would ALL be right.

In our presentation of the news stories we select to link to on the March Report, we hope to be as balanced as our abilities allow; but, those of us working on the March Report also have our own lifetimes of experiences, so please forgive the occasional lapse and call it to our attention. E-mail us at
e-mail address
(This is not a clickable link, and is rendered as a graphic to avoid having our address grabbed by e-mail aggregators for the purpose of spamming or spoofing.)
Please be brief and concise, and, if possible, please provide links to stories that you feel cover a side of an issue that we have overlooked, or that support your argument. Do not send attachments without prior discussion with us.

We will also opine on the issues of the day, but those opinions will be confined to our Editorial column. In our Editorials, we will attempt to lay out the data that we have evaluated that led us to the conclusion we have come to. It is NOT our intent to sway you, simply to state what we believe and why we believe it. If, after reading one of our Editorials, you come to share our opinion, fine. If you disagree, that's fine too, provided that you've done the work of actually evaluating and assessing the information.

The March Report is a real news site, but with a dose of humor. The site slogan is "News and Information Presented Daily in The March Report, with Gales of Derisive Laughter." While not as serious as the Drudge report, neither is it a comedy site such as thedailyshow.com.

Rather, we'd analogize it to a group of people discussing the news around the water cooler or office coffee machine. There's always one idiot who, while well informed, makes sarcastic comments a la Johnny Carson's monologue. The March Report strives to be that idiot.

We hope that you'll make a habit of visiting us every day, 7 days a week. We also hope that you will support our advertisers, in that the revenue generated is what pays the bills, thus making the March Report possible.

That said, welcome aboard. As Rick said to Captain Renault at the end of Casablanca, "Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship." They didn't agree, but each had earned the respect of the other. If you decide we don't merit your respect but choose to come back anyway, then, as Bette Davis said in "All About Eve," "Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy ride."

McCain's Missing K-O Punch

Dick Morris and Eileen McGann -- DickMorris.com

Incredibly, McCain even let Obama get away with lamenting the high deficit. He needed to say: Let me get this straight. You want to raise spending and give everyone a tax cut and you won't increase the deficit - where does the money come from? He needed to explain that Obama would hike taxes on practically everyone, that the Democrat's spending plans require a huge tax increase or a major rise in the deficit ...

Imagine Sarah Palin As President Of The Senate

Bob Guzzardi -- Philadelphia Bulletin

Imagine the unprecedentedly, independent Vice President of the United States, Sarah Palin, sitting above all of them as President of the Senate; defending the citizenry from the abuses of power and privilege. The ensuing drama of American Freedom will undoubtedly involve the clash of the two visions of America: the vision embraced by Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and the Career Elites, Establishment Elites, self-centered, Olympian "know it all", pretentious "fancy pants" telling what is best for us, making our decisions for us, telling us how to spend our money, phonies, all of them, career politicians, career staffers, career lobbyists, and above them all, the vision of Ms. Palin, independent of the status quo Moose Hunter from Wasilla, Alaska, winking at us, over the heads of those Elites ...

Jack Kemp And Peter Ferrara -- Wall Street Journal

Philadelphia Orchestra And Conductor, Going Steady

Steve Smith -- New York Times

Conductor Charles Dutoit is in effect functioning as the orchestra's music director, save for a few key duties. Job No. 1 is to repair its self-esteem after a fractious relationship with Christoph Eschenbach, the former music director. In opening with Ravel's alluring "Valses Nobles et Sentimentales," Mr. Dutoit seemed to be banking -- successfully, it turned out -- on his ability to restore the plush, opulent sound long this orchestra's trademark ...

Garrison Keillor -- New York Times
"Nothing to Be Frightened Of" By Julian Barnes (244 pp. Alfred A. Knopf. $24.95.)
"I don't believe in God, but I miss Him," the book begins. Julian Barnes, an atheist turned agnostic, has decided at the age of 62 to address his fear of death - why should an agnostic fear death who has no faith in an afterlife? How can you be frightened of Nothing? On this simple question Barnes has hung an elegant memoir and meditation, a deep seismic tremor of a book that keeps rumbling and grumbling in the mind for weeks thereafter ...

Attractions And Dangers Of Nostalgia

Hayden Carruth -- Powells.com
In many respects Annie Dillard's book, "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek (Harper Perrennial Modern Classics)," is so ingratiating that even readers who find themselves in fundamental disagreement with it may take pleasure from it, a good deal of pleasure. Of course confirmed city-dwellers, who want no more of nature than a Sunday stroll in the park, will find it a bore. But to armchair naturalists everywhere, and certainly to those who live in the country and seek a good part of their sense of reality in the natural world, her book offers much that is delightful, percipient, and informative. ...
