Memorizing The Bible And Drinking 50 Cups Of Coffee A Day: From Darwin To Dickens, How History's Biggest Thinkers Spent Their Days

Sam Creighton -- Daily Mail (UK)

What makes a genius a genius? According to the graphics herein, it's good time management. Using Mason Currey's book "Daily Rituals: How Artists Work" -- which draws on diaries and letters from the thinkers themselves -- designer RJ Andrews has mapped out the comings and goings of some of history's most important figures, right down to the hour. From Mozart to Freud and Darwin to Dickens, the waking, working and, in some cases, procrastinating of history's greatest minds are laid out for scrutiny. From Balzac drinking 50 cups of black coffee a day, to Milton spending hours memorizing the Bible, the results are not always as you would expect. The variation is also surprising, from Freud's 13 hours of work a day to Mozart's four, there is not, alas, a simple recipe for success. Even so, people can now mimic the schedule of their intellectual heroes. ...

Is Robert Gates' Bombshell Book A Betrayal Of Obama?

Howard Kurtz -- Fox News

Gates has a sterling reputation inside the Beltway. He is a public-spirited Republican who agreed to stay on at the Pentagon under a president of the other party after George W. Bush left office. That reputation makes the Gates critique in "Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War" all the more devastating. He accused Obama of ordering a troop buildup in Afghanistan while not really believing in his own policy; and he recounted Hillary Clinton confiding that she had opposed Bush's 2007 surge in Iraq for political reasons because of the presidential campaign, and Obama "vaguely" agreeing -- a damaging anecdote for Hillary. But the book is riddled with contradictions. Gates winds up saying that Obama got all the decisions right on Afghanistan, praises the courage of his Afghan surge in the face of public opposition, and credits him with approving the mission to take out bin Laden -- over Gates' opposition. Hillary defenders, meanwhile, can point to his assessment of her as "smart, idealistic but pragmatic, tough-minded, indefatigable, funny, a very valuable colleague, and a superb representative of the United States all over the world." Gates, in his book, seems angry at a White House that insisted on running defense policy and challenging the military. There's a healthy dose of score-settling here. He even says he detested his job. ...

John F. Kennedy's Brain Went Missing In 1966, And His Brother Robert May Be Responsible

Gary Buiso -- New York Post

"Not all the evidence from the assassination is at the National Archives. One unique, macabre item from the collection is missing: President Kennedy's brain," writes James Swanson in "End of Days: The Assassination of John F. Kennedy," which comes out Nov. 12, just a few weeks before the 50th anniversary of JFK's death During JFK's autopsy at Bethesda Naval Hospital, the brain was placed in a stainless-steel container with a screw-top lid. "For a time, the steel container was stored in a file cabinet in the office of the Secret Service," writes Swanson. The brain was later placed in a footlocker with other medical evidence and taken to the National Archives, where it was "placed in a secure room designated for the use of JFK's devoted former secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, while she organized his presidential papers. In October 1966, it was discovered that the brain, the tissue slides and other autopsy materials were missing -- and they have never been seen since," Swanson said.

Relatives Of Charles Manson Release Previously Unseen Pictures Of The Monster As A Youth And Reveal The True Evil That Lurked Within

Laura Collins -- Daily Mail (UK)

Video AND TEXT. Eyes ablaze, beard and hair unkempt, a Swastika tattooed on his forehead: the image of Charles Manson seared on the public conscious is recognizably, reassuringly, that of a madman. Today, four decades after the gruesome murders that made him a household name, a very different version of one of America's most notorious and troubling killers has emerged. Seen herein for the first time, pictures of Manson obtained by biographer Jeff Guinn and included in his new book, "Manson: The Life and Times of Charles Manson,"show what the author argues is the true face of the killer. The shy little boy, his scrunched up fist half concealing a dimpled smile as he glances away from the camera. The proud young groom, beaming and gentle, with his hand on his bride's as they cut the cake and celebrate their union. A world away from the 'Satanic guru' of popular imagination -- and Manson's own creation -- these pictures show the true horror of Manson. The fact that he could so artfully conceal what lurked within. Guinn's Manson is a calculating opportunist and arch manipulator who has lied to this day about almost every aspect of his family background.

"Gaddafi's Harem" Book Reveals That Late Libyan Dictator Made Young Women Sex Slaves And Shamed Them To Keep Silent

Sherryl Connelly -- New York Daily News

In a new book, "Gaddafi's Harem: The Story of a Young Woman and the Abuses of Power in Libya," acclaimed French journalist Annick Cojean unveils the deranged dictator's deviant sexual regime and his enslavement of young women throughout the country. The details are shockingly graphic and the stories horrifying, made even more so by the victim-shaming that has silenced the woman in the aftermath. In the first half of the book, the Le Monde journalist relates the story of "Soraya," a pseudonym for a woman who was barely 15 when Muammar Gaddafi's placed his hand on her head at a school function, signaling to his procurers that she was to brought to him. Soraya would spend years in the basement prison of his compound. In the second half of the book, Cojean verifies the details of Soraya's story in a series of clandestine interviews with other victims who only stand to suffer more if they reveal their names and faces. She also report's Gaddafi's pursuit of the wives of foreign heads of states, celebrities, and university students with outrageously lavish gifts. After a year in the basement, Soraya recalls witnessing two "innocent, beautiful and naive" new girls, a 13-year-old from Bayda and a 15-year-old from Darnah, being sent upstairs to Gaddafi's bedroom. She says Gaddafi needed women every day, and "he'd usually try them out and discard them." Or chillingly, "recycle" them among the ministers and military that shared his depraved tastes.

Revealed: Marilyn Called Jackie To Confess J.F.K. Affair . . . And First Lady Replied "That's Great, I'll Move Out And You Have All The Problems"

Helen Pow -- Daily Mail (UK)

In "These Few Precious Days: The Final Year of Jack with Jackie," author Christopher Andersen claims Jackie "knew everything" about Jack's cheating and turned a blind eye, but his relationship with Marilyn "seemed to bother her the most." And she was right to fear the bombshell actress, because Marilyn's sights were firmly set on becoming the President's second wife. Marilyn, who long grappled with psychiatric and emotional problems as well as drugs and alcohol, was convinced J.F.K. was about to leave Jackie for her, her friend Jeanne Carmen reportedly revealed. "Can't you just see me," she asked Carmen, "as first lady?" According to excerpts of the book, Peter Lawford claimed Marilyn called Jackie and told her she was sleeping with Jack, and that he'd allegedly promised to leave his family for her.

Shirley Jones Reveals Shocking Details About Her Sex Life In New Autobiography

Associated Press

Shirley Jones opens the door to her house and appears every inch the ladylike Marian the librarian or sweet farm girl Laurey or cheerfully steady Mrs. Partridge, offering a warm smile and handshake. Her elegant, modestly high-necked jacket is black, her makeup is discreet and her silver hair tidy. Jones' living room has the sort of traditional furniture and knickknacks (exception: a prominent Academy Award) that would fit any suburban house. It all adds up to the publicly familiar Shirley Jones, whose crystalline soprano voice and dewy prettiness made her an immediate star in the 1950s film versions of "Oklahoma!" and "Carousel" and who captured a subsequent generation of fans in TV's "The Partridge Family" in the 1970s. Then there's "Shirley Jones: A Memoir," her new autobiography (written with Wendy Leigh and published by Simon & Schuster's Gallery Books imprint) that turns the 79-year-old actress' image on its head in startling -- even shocking -- ways. "So bring out the smelling salts, hang on to your hats, and get ready for the surprise of your lives!" she writes, coyly, in the book's introduction. It's not false advertising. A substantial part of the book is spent on her troubled marriage to the late Jack Cassidy, the glossily handsome actor and singer whom she describes in a passage as her first lover and "sexual Svengali," and whose lessons she shares candidly. That include Cassidy's impressive endowment, Jones' own "highly sexed" nature that made orgasms a breeze, their threesome with another woman, Cassidy's pre-marital sexual encounter with Cole Porter that Jones says left her unfazed, and her apparent tolerance for his infidelities. Marty Ingels, the comedian who is her second husband of 35 years and counting, jokes that he is offended by her personal history. "All that stuff she did with her husband (Cassidy), all those adventures ... I'm looking into the grounds of having my marriage annulled," he said. That draws a boisterous guffaw from Jones, whose loyalty to her outspoken, eccentric spouse has provoked speculation about how she could have jumped to Ingels from Cassidy, deeply troubled but unquestionably urbane.

Inspired By Dante, It's The Year's Most Hyped Novel: "Da Vinci Code" Author Dan Brown's New Epic

A.N. Wilson -- Daily Mail (UK)

With his new book, "Inferno." Dan Brown returns to Italy, and to the semi-religious themes he seems to love. This time he has been inspired by the country's great medieval poet Dante and his vision of Hell. "The Bible states there's an underworld, and it hints that it might not be a very nice place, but it wasn't until the 1300s and this vision of Inferno that it became terrifying." Its villain, who commits suicide on page one, is obsessed with Dante, and that is why the book is called Inferno. A mad scientist called Zobrist, he thinks that the world has become so overpopulated that it is only a step away from descending into Dante's vision of Hell. So he leaves a clue written on the back of Dante's famous death-mask in the Chamber of the 500 in Florence, for example. There are also clues in Florence's Baptistery, and in the Cathedral of St Mark in Venice. The first clue left by Zobrist is contained in a Botticelli painting of Dante's Hell. He has slightly altered it, putting Langdon on the alert and leading him to the next clue. Langdon slowly comes to realize that Zobrist has the belief that this tormented world will become a safer place only when at least a third of the population is culled. The Black Death, Zobrist believes, is the best thing that ever happened to Europe because it took away a lot of hungry mouths and made Europe more prosperous. After the Black Death came the Renaissance, he points out, and its accompanying great flowering of artistic and literary talent. So Zobrist has put a slowly dissolving plastic bag... somewhere! Does it contain the deadliest virus known to man? Langdon comes to believe so. He and his beautiful companion arrive in a Venice swarming with tourists and believe the bag is hidden in the lagoon.

Former Nixon Aide Claims He Has Evidence Lyndon B. Johnson Arranged John F. Kennedy's Assassination

Damian Ghigliotty -- Daily Mail (UK)

Renowned Republican strategist and lobbyist Roger Stone makes that claim in his upcoming book to be published by Skyhorse Publishing in October: "The Man who killed Kennedy: the case against LBJ". Stone also writes that Richard Nixon and Johnson had a documented relationship with Jack Ruby, Lee Harvey Oswald's killer, years before he shot Oswald in the basement of Dallas police headquarters in 1963. Stone claims that Johnson "micro-managed" Kennedy's Dallas motorcade, demanding that it pass through Dealy Plaza on November 22, 1963, the notorious day when Oswald shot Kennedy from the overlooking book depository building.

The Unsolved Mystery Of The Van Meter Visitor: A Winged Creature With A Glowing Horn That Caused Terror In An Iowa Town 110 Years Ago

David McCormack -- Daily Mail (UK)

A bizarre legend and unsolved mystery which has haunted a small Iowa town for more than 100 years is the subject of a new book called "The Van Meter Visitor: A True and Mysterious Encounter with the Unknown." For several nights in 1903, the small town of Van Meter, Iowa was terrorized by a giant bat-like creature that emerged from an old abandoned mine. The identity of this mysterious monster has never been discovered, but over 100 years later a new book is retelling the amazing tale and hoping to shed some light on what happened all those years ago. The legend dates back to the fall of 1903, when several of Van Meter's most well respected citizens reported a half human, half animal with enormous, smooth bat wings flying about. The creature is described as moving at speeds the townsfolk had never witnessed before, plus it let off a powerful stench and shot a blinding light from its horned head.

Infrared Tests Show Shroud Of Turin May NOT Be A Medieval Fake After All, And Could Have Been Used To Wrap Christ's Body

Nicholas Pisa -- Daily Mail (UK)

For centuries scientists have argued about the authenticity of the Shroud, which is kept in a secure vault in Turin Cathedral, and it has become one of the most iconic images of the Roman Catholic faith. The 14ft-long linen cloth bears the faint image of the front and back of a tall, long-haired, bearded man and appears to be stained by blood from wounds in his feet, wrists and sides that match those suffered by Christ at his Crucifixion. The findings are in a new book called "Il mistero della Sindone" ("The Mystery of the Shroud") which is published on Good Friday. The authors, Professor Giulio Fanti, an expert in mechanical and thermal measurement at the University of Padua's Engineering Faculty and journalist Saverio Gaeta, examined fibres from the Shroud and compared them to samples of cloth dating back to between 3000BC and up to the modern era to contrast them and see if it is a Medieval forgery.

Read An Excerpt From Paul Anka's Book, "My Way: An Autobiography"

Daily Mail (UK)

A teen idol of the 1950s who virtually invented the singer/songwriter/heartthrob combination that still tops pop music today, Paul Anka rocketed to fame with a slew of hits-from "Diana" to "Put Your Head on my Shoulder"-that earned him a place touring with the major stars of his era, including Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Buddy Holly. He wrote Holly's last hit, and just missed joining the rocker on his final, fatal plane flight. Anka also stepped in front of the camera in the teen beach-party movie era, scoring the movies and romancing their starlets, including Annette Funicello. "My Way: An Autobiography" is bursting with rich, rollicking stories of the business and the people in Anka's life: Elizabeth Taylor, Dodi Fayed, Tom Jones, Michael Jackson, Adnan Khashoggi, Little Richard, Brooke Shields, Johnny Roselli, Sammy Davis, Jr., Brigitte Bardot, Barnum & Bailey Circus acrobats, and many more. Anka is forthcoming, funny and smart as a whip about the business he's been in for almost six decades.

Just-Deciphered 1,200-Year-Old Egyptian Manuscript Claims Jesus Was A Shape-Shifter

Damien Gayle -- Daily Mail (UK)

A 1,200-year-old Egyptian manuscript tells the story of the crucifixion with incredible plot twists, including the revelation that Jesus could change shape. The ancient illuminated text's claim explains why Judas used a kiss to betray Jesus, since the Christian Messiah had the ability to transform his appearance. It also claims Jesus in fact spent his last supper with the man who ordered his execution, Roman prefect Pontius Pilate, who is said to have offered to sacrifice his own son in Jesus' place. And it defies the official Easter timeline by putting the day of Jesus' arrest on Tuesday evening, rather than the canonically agreed Thursday. The translation from the original Coptic has been revealed for the first time in a new book by Roelof van den Broek, emeritus professor of the History of Christianity at Utrecht University in the Netherlands: "Pseudo-Cyril of Jerusalem on the Life and the Passion of Christ: A Coptic Apocryphon (Supplements to Vigiliae Christianae: Texts and Studies of Early Christian Life and Language)"

Excerpt Of: "Roger Ailes Off Camera"

Zev Chafets -- Vanity Fair

Roger Ailes is one of the most powerful-and controversial-characters in television media, pilloried by critics and many in the mainstream media and lionized by conservative viewers who can't get enough of his posse of charismatic hosts. His Fox News was accused of being the "communications arm of the Republican Party" in 2010 by then White House communications director Anita Dunn and has been criticized by Barack Obama himself (criticism that Ailes publicly countered with gusto, claiming the president "just has a different belief system from most Americans"). But as outspoken as the Fox News chief may be, little is known about Ailes the man-an extraordinarily private and security-conscious person who once personally safety-tested the thickness of the glass at the network's Manhattan studios. This year, the veil is pulled back by a biography written with Ailes's cooperation, by award-winning columnist and author Zev Chafets. Chafets was given unprecedented access to the man himself, as well as his friends, family, and colleagues. What resulted from theis effort was a series of intimate encounters that have made their way into the book, showing the world from Ailes's perspective. Herein is an adaptation of Chafets's book, "Roger Ailes: Off Camera," to be published later this month by Penguin Sentinel, in which several of these private moments are detailed-including one famous face-off with the president.

"Let Me Out Of My Coffin, I'm Still Alive": New Book Reveals Spine-Chilling True Stories Of Premature Burial

Annabel Venning -- Daily Mail (UK)

Video AND TEXT. Mary Best was 17 years old when she contracted cholera in India. All alone since her adoptive mother left the country some months earlier, Mary suffered hours of agonising stomach cramps and sickness, her pulse becoming weaker and weaker until, at last, the doctor pronounced her dead. She was buried in the vault of her adoptive family a few hours later, in the French cemetery in Calcutta. The year was 1871, and cholera victims were generally buried very soon after death to prevent the germs spreading. In India's tropical heat, a rapid burial was all the more necessary. Nobody questioned Mary's hasty interment. But ten years later, when the vault was opened to admit the body of Mary's newly deceased uncle by adoption, the undertaker and his assistant were greeted by a horrifying sight. The lid of Mary's coffin, which had been nailed down, was on the floor. The girl's skeleton was half in, half out of the coffin, and the right side of her skull bore a large, ugly fracture. The fingers of her right hand were bent as if clutching at something, perhaps her throat, and her clothes were torn. Mary, it seemed, had not been dead when she was nailed into a coffin, but merely unconscious. This is one of the horrific true stories in "Premature Burial: How It May Be Prevented."

From LBJ To Nixon To Obama, Why The White House May "Regret" Hassling The Press

Tevi Troy -- Washington Post

Tevi Troy, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, was a senior adviser to President George W. Bush. He is the author of the forthcoming "What Jefferson Read, Ike Watched, and Obama Tweeted: 200 Years of Popular Culture in the White House." Gene Sperling has reserved for himself a special place in Washington lore. In the days leading up to the sequester deadline Friday, the city found itself immersed in a bizarre debate over whether Sperling, an economic adviser to President Obama and a Clinton administration veteran, tried to intimidate The Washington Post's Bob Woodward by suggesting in an e-mail that Woodward would "regret" his writings about the president's fiscal policy proposals. Though the full e-mail message, once leaked, ended up reading far more chummy than threatening -- it was virtually "e-kissed," as one reporter put it -- the spat, quickly dubbed "Woodwardgate," had a compelling historical symmetry to it. The very notion of a senior White House adviser possibly attempting to intimidate an enterprising reporter smacked of exactly the kind of arrogance that Woodward himself uncovered decades ago in his exposes of Richard Nixon's presidency.

JFK Secretly Freed Rapists, Drug Dealers And Mafia Hitmen To Kill Castro And Curb Threat Of Communism, Claims Explosive New Book

Matt Blake -- Daily Mail (UK)

At the height of tensions between America and neighboring Communist Cuba in the early 1960s, JFK was implicit in the freeing of rapists, drug dealers, and Mafia hitmen through CIA in a bid to recruit "untraceable" spies willing to risk their lives on dangerous missions rather than go back to jail, a new book sensationally claims. Desperate to remove Castro from power, the president resorted to using dangerous criminals as operatives -- rather than CIA agents -- to "do America's dirty work" as they couldn't be linked back to his administration, it is claimed. In one failed plot, an ex con was smuggled into Cuba in 1962 to pose as a waiter in Castro's favorite restaurant where he would drop poison tablets into the revolutionary leader's soup. The explosive claims come in a new book by veteran American Journalist and author William Deane, "Smooth Criminal: A One-Man American Crime Wave,"who claims specially-recruited criminals became "untouchable" and were allowed to embark on 'crime sprees' in the US without fear of prosecution.

How Tom Cruise's Cult "Controlled His Love Life" Claims A Book On His Links To Scientology

Tom Leonard -- Daily Mail (UK)

They grew him a wild flower meadow in the desert where he and Nicole Kidman could frolic hand-in-hand. They salute him and call him "sir." And when he needed a new woman in his life, they "auditioned" dozens of actresses for the role. The extraordinary lengths to which the Church of Scientology has allegedly gone to woo Tom Cruise are detailed in a controversial new book which contrasts his demi-god status in the organization with the miserable existence of its rank-and-file devotees. To outsiders, it has always seemed odd that the squeaky-clean Hollywood superstar has lavished praise on the "church" as a force for good in the world, when a growing number of ex-members have portrayed it as a ruthless and exploitative cult that rules its brainwashed flock with a rod of iron. Now a book by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Lawrence Wright has painted a withering portrait of an organization which has always seen celebrity endorsement as essential to its mystique. In "Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief," Wright claims that Scientology boss David Miscavige succeeded in cultivating Cruise as a spiritual leader of his movement after he became Hollywood's biggest star with films such as "Top Gun" and "Mission: Impossible." Cruise, in turn, willingly became the church's smiling public face, ploughing millions of dollars into its work and even attempting to lobby foreign leaders to advance its dubious cause around the world.

Anna Wintour: The Devil's No Diplomat!

Jane Ridley -- New York Post

Visiting then-First Lady Hillary Clinton at 1600 Pennyslvania Ave. in the 1990s, Anna Wintour couldn't help herself. She stuffed a pile of White House letterhead notepaper and envelopes into her Prada handbag, and gave the distinctive stationery to her family as "been there, done that" souvenirs. It's the sort of prank you might expect from social-climbing desperate housewife Jill Kelley on a private West Wing tour, not the fashion veteran who is rumored to be on President Obama's shortlist for US ambassador to the UK, or possibly France. "It kind of underscores her political knowledge or lack thereof," says Manhattan-based writer Jerry Oppenheimer, who described the bizarre incident in his unauthorized biography of Wintour, "Front Row: Anna Wintour: What Lies Beneath the Chic Exterior of Vogue's Editor in Chief." Oppenheimer is among a number of critics who find it absurd to think that Wintour, once famously nicknamed "Nuclear Wintour," might become a key diplomat. ...

Kirstie Alley Tells All: Secret Romance With Patrick Swayze, Calls John Travolta "Greatest Love"

Vanessa Weber -- ABC News (US)

Video AND TEXT. From "Dancing With the Stars" to her famously fluctuating weight, Kirstie Alley is a woman who loves to reinvent herself and isn't afraid to tell all. Her latest disclosure: a secret romance with Patrick Swayze. The co-stars fell in love working on the movie "North and South," Alley said, and Swayze wanted Alley to get a divorce from her husband and marry him, but Alley wouldn't do it. "I probably was more willing to break up my marriage, and I wasn't willing to break up his marriage," Alley told ABC News' Barbara Walters, in an interview about her new book, "The Art of Men (I Prefer Mine al Dente)," which details her ups and downs in life and in love. Alley's acting career took off, and her love of Hollywood men did not end with Swayze. After a wildly successful run on "Cheers," Alley signed on to do a film with John Travolta about a talking baby: 1989's "Look Who's Talking" and love bloomed. Alley and Travolta made two successful sequels and became lifelong friends. The actress dashed the rumors that Travolta is gay.

Bin Laden Raid Tell-All Author Revealed, Questions Raised Whether Ex-Navy Seals Have Freedom Of Speech

Justin Fishel -- FOX News

The author of a recently announced insider account of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden has been identified as a 36-year-old former Navy SEAL Team 6 member from Alaska who also played a role in the high-profile rescue of an American captain kidnapped by Somali pirates. The book, "No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama Bin Laden," is set to hit shelves on Sept 11. It is penned under the pseudonym "Mark Owen," according to the publisher, but multiple sources told Fox News his name is in fact Matt Bissonnette, 36, of Wrangell, Alaska. Bissonnette could be exposing himself to legal trouble, as the Pentagon has not vetted the account. The tell-all book also has apparently upset a large population of former and current SEAL members who worry about releasing information that could compromise future missions. One Navy SEAL told Fox News, "How do we tell our guys to stay quiet when this guy won't?" Other SEALs are expressing anger, with some going so far as to call him a "traitor."

Master Forger Comes Clean About Tricks That Fooled Art World For Four Decades

Dalya Alberge -- Guardian (UK)

An extraordinary memoir is to reveal how a gifted artist managed to forge his way to riches by conning high-profile auctioneers, dealers and collectors over four decades. The book, "Caveat Emptor: The Secret Life of an American Art Forger." tells the story of Ken Perenyi, an American who lived in London for 30 years. The revelations within it are likely to spark embarrassment on both sides of the Atlantic. Perhaps Perenyi's proudest moment came when a forgery of "Ruby Throats with Apple Blossoms," by the American 19th-century artist Martin Johnson Heade, made the front page of a national newspaper and was heralded as a major "discovery." It later fetched nearly $100,000 at auction in New York. Claiborne Hancock, of Pegasus Books, describes the revelations in Caveat Emptor as "a bombshell for the major international auction houses and galleries."

Nun's Book On Masturbation Slammed By Vatican

Agence France-Presse (FR)

The Vatican slammed a "sexual morality" book written by an American Catholic nun on Monday, warning believers to stay away from the tome which justifies masturbation, homosexuality and divorce. Margaret Farley's 2006 book "Just Love: A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics" "affirms positions that are in direct contradiction with Catholic teaching in the field of sexual morality," the Vatican said in a statement. Farley, a member of the Sisters of Mercy and professor emerita at Yale Divinity School, expressed support for a long list of sins in the eyes of the Church. "Masturbation usually does not raise any moral questions at all. It is surely the case that many women have found great good in self-pleasuring... (which) actually serves relationships rather than hindering them," she wrote. On the issue of homosexuality, the prominent theologian said "same-sex relationships and activities can be justified according to the same sexual ethic as heterosexual relationships and activities" and "should be respected."

Holder, Axelrod Nearly Engaged In White House Fisticuffs

Jamie Weinstein -- Daily Caller

Attorney General Eric Holder nearly came to blows with political strategist David Axelrod after a Cabinet meeting in the White House, according to a new book by a Newsweek investigative reporter. In Daniel Klaidman's "Kill or Capture: The War on Terror and the Soul of the Obama Presidency," Klaidman tells of a heated exchange between the two that almost turned physical in the West Wing. Klaidman writes that Axelrod, then Obama's senior adviser, was "incensed" because he had heard that "Holder and his aides were spreading the word that he was trying to improperly influence the Justice Department." "Axelrod, who knew all too well that even the hint of White House meddling with Justice Department investigations could detonate a full-blown scandal, had been careful not to come close to that line," Klaidman writes. So after a Cabinet meeting ended, Axelrod apparently made a "beeline for the attorney general." "'Don't ever, ever accuse me of trying to interfere with the operations of the Justice Department,' he warned Holder after confronting him in the hallway," according to Klaidman's account.

Bill Clinton Calls Obama An "Amateur" In New Book

Carl Campanile -- New York Post

Bill Clinton thought so little of President Obama -- mocking him as an "amateur" -- that he pressed his wife last summer to quit her job as secretary of state and challenge him in the primaries, a new book claims. "The country needs you!" the former president told Hillary Clinton, urging her to run this year, according to accounts of the conversation included in Edward Klein's new biography of Obama. The title of Klein's explosive, unauthorized bio of Obama, "The Amateur" (Regnery Publishing), was taken directly from Bill Clinton's bombshell criticism of the president, the author said. "Barack Obama," Bill Clinton said, according to book excerpts, "is an amateur." The withering criticism is incredible, given the fact that Bill Clinton is actively campaigning for Obama's re-election.

Pope John XXIII Launched Vatican II And Then Some

Associated Press

Elected at age 76, the legitimate Pope John XXIII was expected to be a transitional, relatively uneventful pope following the 19-year reign of the World War II-era Pope Pius XII. John had other plans. Less than three months after being elected, he announced that he would convene Vatican II, the first ecumenical council in a century. Vatican II went on to allow use of the vernacular rather than Latin for Mass. It called for greater participation of lay faithful in the life of the church and revolutionized Catholic relations with Jews. It also crystalized the divisions between traditionalist, conservative Catholics and the more progressive wing of the church that are still alive today. ...

Rounding Third: Quiet Accomplishment For Pujols

Sports Network

Have performance-enhancing drugs made us that jaded with regards to baseball milestones that hitting 500 home runs isn't a big deal anymore? I mean, where was the buildup to Albert Pujols becoming the 26th player to join what was once a pretty exclusive fraternity? Now granted, he hit two on Tuesday to reach the magic number, but how many casual baseball fans even knew he was approaching 500? But still, this wasn't some run-of-the mill player. This was a three-time National League MVP, who at one time was the face of baseball. Pujols is a player who started his career with 10 straight seasons of at least a .300 batting average, 30 homers and 100 RBI, and he fell one batting-average point and one RBI short of doing it in an 11th straight season in 2011.Quite simply, he was what his nickname was: he was a machine. ...

While scientists believe the universe began with a Big Bang, most Americans put a big question mark on the concept, an Associated Press-GfK poll found. Yet when it comes to smoking causing cancer or that a genetic code determines who we are, the doubts disappear. N.A.S.A. Captures "Graceful Eruption" From The Sun

Sudeshna Chowdhury -- Christian Science Monitor

N.A.S.A.'s Solar Dynamics Observatory has snapped a spectacular video of a solar flare erupting from the sun. The space agency classified the flare, which peaked on April 2 at 10:05 a.m. EDT, as an M6.5, making it a mid-level eruption. M-class flares are a tenth as powerful than the most intense group of solar flares: X-class. The number after M indicates the strength of the flare. For example, am M2 is twice as intense than an M1. "Some people worry that a gigantic 'killer solar flare' could hurl enough energy to destroy Earth, but this is not actually possible," said N.A.S.A.. The heat from the solar flare cannot reach Earth, but the electromagnetic radiation and high-energy particles can reach the planet, causing disruption of satellites, global positioning systems, and electrical power grids. ...

One cardiologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, Dr. Robert Siegel, has called the results "quite remarkable" and unexpected. The study finds that sufferers of diabetes mellitus, or simply diabetes, might actually be able to reverse the effects of the disease by turning to gastric bypass surgery. The study's results, which were made known by the American College of Cardiology and published by the New England Journal of Medicine, involved 150 test patients. YEST Rubin "Hurricane" Carter Dies At 76; His Life Story Is A Warning To Us About Racism And Revenge

Geoffrey Robertson -- Guardian (UK)

In 1966, when Carter -- then a top professional boxer -- was first convicted by an all-white jury for slaying three of their kind in a local bar, the governor of Georgia was fighting desegregation with a pick-axe. Now his successor, Jimmy Carter, was on the way to the US presidency, preaching racial harmony and quoting Bob Dylan in his campaign ads. Rubin's original 1966 conviction for an apparently motiveless triple murder was based on palpably inadequate evidence and came at a time when he was a contender for the world middleweight title. Yet Carter was re-convicted on even weaker evidence at his retrial in 1976 and returned to prison. Not until 1985 was this wrongful reconviction overturned. His story inspired one of Dylan's best protest songs and Norman Jewison's fine movie, in which he was played by Denzel Washington. As a warning against possibility of convicting -- and executing -- the innocent because of prosecutors who play the race card and hide exculpatory evidence, the story of "the Hurricane" has a significance that will outlive his death. ...

YEST Family And Friends Say Farewell To Peaches Geldof

BBC News (UK)

The 25-year-old television presenter, model and socialite, died suddenly two weeks ago at her home. Located next to Sir Bob's Davington Priory country estate, where Peaches grew up, the streets were lined with well-wishers and photographers ahead of the service. Peaches' ashes are expected to be scattered in the estate's garden. Geldof's body was found on 7 April at the home she shared with her husband, musician Thomas Cohen and their sons, Astala, 23 months, and 11-month-old Phaedra, in Wrotham, Kent, UK. Her cause of death is not yet known as a post-mortem test was inconclusive. The results of toxicology tests are expected in the coming weeks, after which an inquest is expected to be opened. ...

Comedian John Pinette Dies At 50, Months After Telling Fans He Was "Physically Spent"

Emily Yahr -- Washington Post

Video AND TEXT. Comedian John Pinette, who famously appeared in the "Seinfeld" series finale, died over the weekend in Pittsburgh at age 50, just three months after he told fans that he was postponing his national stand-up tour because of health problems. The medical examiner ruled the death as a result of natural causes, as Pinette suffered a pulmonary embolism. Pinette told his Twitter followers earlier this year that he was "physically spent" after losing a lot of weight and undergoing some small surgeries, and would have to take a break from work. "I didn't give myself enough time to heal this past fall and it has caught up to me," he wrote. "But I'm on the mend and I promise to hit the stage as soon as humanly possible." ...

Mickey Rooney, Child Star, Legend Of The Screen, Dies At 93

Guardian (UK)

Actor Mickey Rooney, who became the United States' biggest movie star while still a brash teenager in the 1930s and later a versatile character actor in a career that spanned 10 decades, has died aged 93. Rooney, who developed a reputation as a hard-partying, off-screen brat in his heyday and married eight times, died after a long illness. Los Angeles police commander Andrew Smith said that Rooney was with his family when he died Sunday at his North Hollywood home. "He was undoubtedly the most talented actor that ever lived. There was nothing he couldn't do," actress Margaret O'Brien said in a statement. She said she had worked recently with Rooney on a film, "The Strange Case of Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde," and he "was as great as ever" during the filming. Actress Rose Marie, a long-time friend, said he was one of the greatest talents show business had ever had. "I shall miss him and the world shall miss him," she said in a statement. ...

Frankie Knuckles, "Godfather Of House Music," Dead At 59

Michaelangelo Matos -- Rolling Stone

Nobody can agree on who invented the blues or birthed rock & roll, but there is no question that house music came from Frankie Knuckles, who died Monday afternoon of as-yet-undisclosed causes. One of the Eighties and Nineties' most prolific house music producers and remixers, Knuckles is, hands down, one of the dozen most important DJs of all time. At his Chicago clubs the Warehouse (1977-82) and Power Plant (1983-85), Knuckles' marathon sets, typically featuring his own extended edits of a wide selection of tracks from disco to post-punk, R&B to synth-heavy Eurodisco, laid the groundwork for electronic dance music culture-all of it. ...

An Inconvenient Lie

Climate Researchers' Ship Trapped By Ice; Only 1 Of 23 Network News Stories Mention Mission

Mike Ciandella -- Media Research Center

Scientists on a climate change expedition to Antarctica have been stranded since Christmas morning because the ice trapped their ship; but the broadcast networks seem to have forgotten why the Russian ship, Akademic Shokalskiy, was on its way to Antarctica. Since the ship became stranded Dec. 25, only one story out of 23 on the network morning and evening news shows mentioned that climate change had anything to do with the expedition. So far, three rescue attempts have been thwarted by growing levels of sea ice and weather conditions. According to ABC's "Good Morning America" on Dec. 30, "the ice could be as thick as 13 feet." Rather than pointing out the purpose of the scientists, the networks often referred to the stranded people as "passengers," "trackers" and even "tourists," with no mention of climate change. ...

G.O.P. Lawmakers Accuse E.P.A. Of Muzzling Scientists On Climate Regulations

Fox News

Republican leaders on the House Science Committee are accusing the Environmental Protection Agency of disregarding science in its push to impose carbon dioxide limits on power plants. Committee Chairman Lamar Smith, R-Texas, and 20 other Republican lawmakers sent a letter to E.P.A. Administrator Gina McCarthy on Thursday, claiming the agency has "muzzled" members of its independent science advisory board. "The E.P.A.'s proposed power plant regulations will put Americans out of work and will make electricity more expensive and less reliable," the lawmakers wrote. "It is misleading and dangerous for E.P.A. to quietly dismiss inconvenient facts and ignore the consequences of its costly regulations. Americans deserve honesty." ...

Many people could die as extreme weather becomes common. There will be more freak winds like the October storm, which killed four people. Heatwaves will be lethal and the sea level will rise, leaving coastal towns at risk of being swamped by storm surges. New "Little Ice Age"? Low Sunspot Activity Means Earth Chilling Until At Least 2030

WND

Video AND TEXT. Last week, the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC, reported it was 95 percent certain that climate change was the result of human activity, specifically the burning of fossil fuels that emit "greenhouse gases." "That's the result that they get when you premeditate your science," said Dr. Tim Ball, former professor of climatology at the University of Winnipeg. "When you set out to establish a certain scientific outcome and you program your computers to do that, you shouldn't be surprised if that's the result you get. The problem is what they're getting out of their computers is not fitting with what's actually happening. Of course, that's been the problem with the IPCC all along. The temperature is going down and has for 17 years while carbon dioxide increases," Ball said. "According to their hypothesis and model, that's simply not supposed to happen. Rather than doing what they should do and coming out and saying, 'Our science is wrong, our models are wrong and we apologize for all the inconvenience we've caused you,' they're just plowing ahead." The long-held contention of those who warn of climate catastrophe is that rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere lead to higher temperatures. So if that belief is incorrect, why are temperatures getting cooler? "The sun is causing the cooling that's going on. The sun reached a peak of activity around 2000 and has been declining ever since," said Ball, who noted that the cooling trend will continue for years to come. "We're heading toward what occurred around the year 1800. It was called the Dalton Minimum of low sunspot activities," he explained. "We certainly are down to that in number of sunspots this year. That means the cooling will continue at least until 2030 and yet the government is preparing for warming, which is outrageous. Some people think that this cycle of sunspot activity and global cooling will take us down to as cold as it was around 1680, which was the nadir of the Little Ice Age." ...

Now It's Global Cooling: Record Return Of Arctic Ice Cap As It Grows By 60% In A Year

David Rose -- Daily Mail (UK)

A chilly Arctic summer has left nearly a million more square miles of ocean covered with ice than at the same time last year: an increase of 60 per cent. The rebound from 2012's record low comes six years after the BBC reported that global warming would leave the Arctic ice-free in summer by 2013. Instead, days before the annual autumn re-freeze is due to begin, an unbroken ice sheet more than half the size of Europe already stretches from the Canadian islands to Russia's northern shores. The Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific has remained blocked by pack-ice all year. More than 20 yachts that had planned to sail it have been left ice-bound and a cruise ship attempting the route was forced to turn back. Some eminent scientists now believe the world is heading for a period of cooling that will not end until the middle of this century: a process that would expose computer forecasts of imminent catastrophic warming as dangerously misleading. ...

Obama's Global-Warming Claims Demolished

Bob Unruh -- WND

Dubbed the "high priest of climate skepticism," former Margaret Thatcher adviser Christopher Monckton has become a formidable foe of the movement claiming mankind is causing catastrophic "global warming," noting that the average worldwide temperature has not risen in nearly two decades. So when President Obama recently announced his plan to bypass Congress and use his executive power to "fight climate change," targeting the coal-energy industry, Monckton responded. Some of what Obama said was simply copied from Al Gore's writings on global warming, he said, and virtually everything was incomplete, misleading, or wrong. For example, the "worry that rising levels [of CO2] might someday disrupt the fragile balance that makes our planet so hospitable" is scientifically unfounded. CO2 concentrations, at almost 400 μatm, are almost as low as they have ever been in geological time. In the Jurassic era, 175 million years ago, CO2 concentration was about 6000 μatm; in the Cambrian era, 550 million years ago, it was 8000 μatm; and in the Neoproterozoic era, 750 million years ago, it was 30,000 μatm, or 75 times today's concentration; yet the planet survived and throve. David Bellamy Says The End Of His Career Was Caused By His View That Climate Change Was "Poppycock." "I Was Shunned. They Didn't Want To Hear"

Paul Cahalan -- Independent (UK)

But for the grace of God, he would be revered as the man who brought botany to life through glorious rambling monologues in a time before CGI graphics and hi-tech film techniques became de rigueur. But his fame and acclaim rolled off the rails in 2004 when he said global warming was nothing but "poppycock." He was deserted by fans, shunned by peers and, he says, ostracised by broadcasters and conservation groups that once thrived through his endorsement: he was fired as president of the Wildlife Trusts. Bellamy, who appears not to be able to shake the habit of speaking as if the camera were still rolling, is unrepentant. He is clear his stance on climate change ended his TV career. "All of the work dried up after that. I was due to start another series with the BBC but that didn't go anywhere, and ITV didn't want to know. I was shunned. They didn't want to hear the other side." But does he still believe he is right? "Absolutely. It is not happening at all, but if you get the idea that people's children will die because of CO2 they fall for it," he says, perhaps buoyed by forecasters at the Met Office this week downgrading a prediction for global warming to suggest that by 2017 average temperatures will have remained about the same for two decades. ...

"There Has Been No Global Warming For 16 Years"

John Griffing -- WND

The attendees at the recent global "climate" conference in Doha, Qatar, most of them highly influential and powerful in their home countries, were treated to a special address recently. "There has been no global warming for 16 years (actually 18 or 19 years, on closer examination)," the speaker said. "Even if warming were to occur at the predicted rate this century, it would be many times cheaper to adapt ... than to attempt, futilely, to mitigate it today. An independent scientific enquiry would be a good idea, to make sure that the conferences on the climate were still heading in the right direction." Those words are what Christopher Monckton of Brenchley, described as the high priest of climate skepticism recalls telling the stunned crowd of affluent attendees. He addressed the conference, which had just finished hours of consultation and discussion of how to prepare for the catastrophe long predicted by Al Gore, that of global warming. "My intervention in Doha was on the spur of the moment, right at the end of the final plenary session when no one else wanted to speak," he said. "The intervention gained very substantial international publicity, and I had not expected this. As a result, it is now widely known that there has been no global warming at all for more than a decade and a half." ...

What Global Warming? Alaska Is Headed For An Ice Age As Scientists Report State's Steady Temperature Decline

Daily Mail (UK)

Since 2000, temperatures in Alaska have dropped by 2.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Scientists reviewed weather reports from 20 climate stations operated by the National Weather Service located across Alaska; 19 of the 20 weather stations reported falling temperatures. An ocean phenomenon has disrupted a storm regulating system thus allowing cold winter storms to linger longer and bring a deep chill. Local residents have noticed the colder temps but say its no big deal since they are already bundled up for 20-below zero temperatures. ...

Global Warming Stopped 16 Years Ago, Reveals Meteorology Office Report Quietly Released

David Rose -- Daily Mail (UK)

The figures, which have triggered debate among climate scientists, reveal that from the beginning of 1997 until August 2012, there was no discernible rise in aggregate global temperatures. This means that the "plateau" or "pause" in global warming has now lasted for about the same time as the previous period when temperatures rose, 1980 to 1996. Before that, temperatures had been stable or declining for about 40 years. The new data, compiled from more than 3,000 measuring points on land and sea, was issued quietly on the internet, without any media fanfare, and, until today, it has not been reported. This stands in sharp contrast to the release of the previous figures six months ago, which went only to the end of 2010 -- a very warm year. Ending the data then means it is possible to show a slight warming trend since 1997, but 2011 and the first eight months of 2012 were much cooler, and thus this trend is erased. ...

Climate-Change Prophet Al Gore Bails From Green-Energy Investment, Even As His Company Still Touts Profits Of "Alternative" Market

Colin Flaherty -- WND

If you are thinking about green energy for your portfolio, Al Gore has a few words of advice: "Don't do it." "Of course he does not say that in public," says Bill Gunderson, president of Gunderson Capital Management. "Gore's company still talks about how alternative energy is a good investment. How companies are adopting it, governments are subsidizing it and people are using it." But SEC filings from Gore's company, Generation Investment, tell a different story, says Gunderson, who hosts a nationally syndicated financial talk radio program and writes for MarketWatch and TheStreet.com. "Generation Investment says it is all about climate change, but it is just a typical investment fund with typical stocks," Gunderson said. "It has Amazon, Colgate Palmolive, eBay, Nielsen, Qualcomm, Strayer University and a smattering of stocks from biotech and health care. Not one company that makes solar panels, or windmills or biogas or electric cars. Catheters and commercial real estate, yes. Solar panels, no." ...

Discovery Of Historical Photos Shows Greenland Ice Loss Greater In The 1930s Than Today

Science Codex

A chance discovery of 80-year-old photo plates in a Danish basement is providing new insight into how Greenland glaciers are melting today. Researchers at the National Survey and Cadastre of Denmark -- that country's federal agency responsible for surveys and mapping -- had been storing the glass plates since explorer Knud Rasmussen's expedition to the southeast coast of Greenland in the early 1930s. In this week's online edition of Nature Geoscience, Ohio State University researchers and colleagues in Denmark describe how they analyzed ice loss in the region by comparing the images on the plates to aerial photographs and satellite images taken from World War II to today. Taken together, the imagery shows that glaciers in the region were melting even faster in the 1930s than they are today, said Jason Box, associate professor of geography and researcher at the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State. ...

Global Warming Skeptics As Knowledgeable About Science As Climate Change Believers, Study Says

Maxim Lott -- FOX News

Are global warming skeptics anti-science? Or just ignorant about science? Maybe neither. A study published Sunday in the journal Nature Climate Change finds that people who are not that worried about the effects of global warming tend to have a slightly higher level of scientific knowledge than those who are worried, as determined by their answers to questions. The quiz, containing 22 questions about both science and statistics, was given to 1,540 representative Americans. Respondents who were relatively less worried about global warming got 57 percent of them right, on average, just barely outscoring those whose who saw global warming as a bigger threat. We're Due For Global Cooling, Caused By Solar Minimum -- Again

Space Daily

An abrupt cooling in Europe together with an increase in humidity and particularly in windiness coincided with a sustained reduction in solar activity 2800 years ago. Scientists from the German Research Center for Geosciences GFZ in collaboration with Swedish and Dutch colleagues provide evidence for a direct solar-climate linkage on centennial timescales. Around 2800 years ago, one of these Grand Solar Minima, the Homeric Minimum, caused a distinct climatic change in less than a decade in Western Europe. The exceptional seasonally laminated sediments from the studied maar lake allow a precise dating even of short-term climate changes. The results show for a 200 year long period strongly increased springtime winds during a period of cool and wet climate in Europe. ...

Michigan Affirmative Action Ban Upheld By U.S. High Court

Greg Stohr And Sophia Pearson -- Businessweek

The justices, voting 6-2, today said racial preferences were a legitimate subject to be put before the state's voters. A federal appeals court had said Michigan unconstitutionally stripped racial minorities of their rights. "This case is not about how the debate about racial preferences should be resolved," Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the court's lead opinion. "It is about who may resolve it." The ruling has both symbolic and substantive significance. A decade ago, the University of Michigan won a Supreme Court decision that let institutions across the country continue to use race as an admissions factor. The survival of the voter-approved initiative means that ruling is nullified for the university that secured it. Black enrollment is down about 30 percent at the undergraduate and law schools since the measure took effect, according to the university's figures. Michigan is one of 10 states where race-conscious admissions are barred at public institutions, by ballot initiative or other government action. ...

Justice Department Announces Clemency Overhaul, Allows Release For Some After 10 Years

Fox News

The DOJ moved Wednesday to significantly expand the number of people eligible for clemency, issuing new guidelines allowing certain prisoners who already have served at least 10 years behind bars to apply for release. The initiative is part of a broader Obama administration effort to ease sentences for nonviolent drug offenders. Deputy Attorney General James Cole outlined the changes, which include six separate criteria inmates must meet to be eligible, on Wednesday morning. Among the requirements is that inmates must have served at least 10 years of their federal sentence and not have a "significant criminal history." They must be "non-violent, low-level offenders" with no significant ties to major gangs, have a record of good conduct in prison and have no history of violence. Sign-Ups Under ObamaCare Not As High As White House Says, Gallup Survey Suggests

Fox News

The massive survey, released on Monday, shows the number of uninsured indeed has fallen to its lowest level in years, likely thanks to the Affordable Care Act. The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index measured the share of adults without health insurance. That shrank from 17.1 percent at the end of last year to 15.6 percent for the first three months of 2014. The decline of 1.5 percentage points would translate roughly to more than 3.5 million people gaining coverage. But the numbers, released a week after the close of the health law's first enrollment season, also suggest a far more modest impact on coverage than statistics cited by the Obama administration. ...

Ten years after Pat Tillman's death by friendly fire, it's still not certain who shot the NFL player-turned-Army-corporal in Afghanistan; but one of the three Army Rangers who opened fire says he can't shake the fact that he might be at fault.  I.R.S. Gave Bonuses To Employees Who Owed Back Taxes. And That's Not All.

Gail Sullivan -- Washington Post

So, where do you work? That's a question Internal Revenue Service employees must dread. Besides the fact that nobody like paying taxes, the agency's reputation has suffered in the past year because of accusations that it subjected applications for tax exempt status from tea party groups to greater scrutiny. But things got worse for the I.R.S. yesterday. A report from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration shows that between Oct. 1, 2010, and Dec. 31, 2012, the I.R.S. paid $2.8 million in bonuses to employees cited in the past year for such things as drug use, making violent threats, fraudulently claiming unemployment benefits, misusing government credit cards and -- get this -- failing to pay their taxes. The report said more than 1,100 employees who failed to pay their taxes received discretionary awards of more than $1 million in cash bonuses and more than 10,000 hours in extra paid vacation. ...

Judge Smacks Obama Secrecy In Unique F.O.I.A. Case

Michael Doyle -- McClatchy News

In a Freedom of Information Act victory, a federal judge has slapped the Obama administration for its secretive ways and ordered officials to turn over a bland-sounding foreign policy document. Chastising what she called "the government's unwarranted expansion of the presidential communications privilege at the expense of the public's interest in disclosure," U.S. District Judge Ellen Seal Huvelle ruled the Presidential Policy Directive on Global Development is not exempt from F.O.I.A. New York Times Reporter: Obama Admin "Most Closed, Control-Freak Administration I've Ever Covered"

Ed Morrissey -- Hot Air

Remember when the media rushed to talk about transparency in the Barack Obama "Hope and Change" era? Leonard Downie, who once worked as the executive editor of the Washington Post and wrote a novel about Washington corruption and the Iraq War, finds a bigger and non-fictional problem in the successor to George W. Bush. Downie gives the Post a preview of his report from the Committee to Protect Journalists which outlines the Obama war on reporters and their sources: "A memo went out from the chief of staff a year ago to White House employees and the intelligence agencies that told people to freeze and retain any e-mail, and presumably phone logs, of communications with me," Sanger said. As a result, longtime sources no longer talk to him. "They tell me: 'David, I love you, but don't e-mail me. Let's don't chat until this blows over.'" Claim: Obama Hid "Gay Life" To Become President

Jerome R. Corsi -- WND

A prominent member of Chicago's homosexual community claims Barack Obama's participation in the "gay" bar and bathhouse scene was so well known that many who were aware of his lifestyle were shocked when he ran for president and finally won the White House. "It was preposterous to the people I knew then to think Obama was going to keep his gay life secret," said Kevin DuJan, who was a gossip columnist in Chicago for various blogs when Obama was living in the city as a community organizer and later a state senator. "Nobody who knew Obama in the gay bar scene thought he could possibly be president," said DuJan. Obama, DuJan said, is "not heterosexual and he's not bisexual. He's homosexual." DuJan said that during Obama's first presidential campaign, "there was fear in the gay community" about talking openly about Obama being homosexual, particularly after the murder in December 2007 of Donald Young, the openly gay choir director at Jeremiah Wright's Trinity United Church of Christ, who was known to be a close friend of Obama. ...

Sen. Mike Lee Says Obama Pressured Chief Justice Roberts To Uphold Obamacare

WND

Roberts defended his decision to uphold Obamacare by saying a court's role is to save a statute if there is a way to plausibly claim it's constitutional. Lee said that was one of the chief justice's major mistakes. "That's where he went wrong. It's true that when courts are reviewing a statute against a constitutional challenge, to the extent that there are ambiguities, to the extent that you can read a provision one way or the other, the court's supposed to favor any possible reading of the statute that would save it," Lee said. "The reading that he adopted was not fairly possible. It was unambiguous based on the text that what Congress did contravened the Constitution. And that's why he messed up." Shortly after the 5-4 ruling was handed down last summer, reports surfaced that Roberts originally sided with the three conservative justices and swing vote Anthony Kennedy to find the individual mandate unconstitutional. Sometime between the oral arguments in March and the final verdict in June, Roberts flipped his vote to uphold Obamacare. Kennedy reportedly tried for one month to convince Roberts to stick with his initial instinct and rule the mandate unconstitutional. "For the most part, he has been consistent with his oath to uphold the Constitution. He has been a judicial conservative, what you would call a textualist, someone who tries to read the law based on what it says rather than what he wishes it said," Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, said. "This case was an aberration, not only in its outcome but also in the fact that I'm not sure there's ever been another case that he's decided that was as prominent and as far-reaching in its implications as this one. Nor was there any other case in which there was so much attention paid to him personally related to the outcome of the case." ...

Obama Administration Pledged Transparency, But Slowed Document Requests, Memos Show

Judson Berger -- Fox News

Even as the freshly minted Obama administration was pledging a "new era of open government" in 2009, officials were quietly adding new rules that had the potential to slow down public requests for documents. Those rules could even trip up present-day efforts to dig into the I.R.S.' practice of targeting conservative groups. The rules detailed in the memos largely emanated from the Treasury Department and, specifically, the I.R.S.. "It would seem to repudiate this notion that this is going to be the most transparent government in history," said Dan Epstein, executive director of Cause of Action, the group that first obtained the memos. Epstein said the document request procedures are "troubling" since the media are "really concerned about the limits of government power." ...

IRS, OSHA, ATF, And FBI All Probed Tea Party Group, Says Suit Filed By Top Washington-Based Lawyer

Jerome R. Corsi -- WND

The scandal involving IRS discrimination against conservative groups is about to reach a new level of intensity. NBC Correspondent: Obama Trying To "Criminalize Journalism"

WND

It happened with MSNBC host Joe Scarborough, who noted that some people who definitely are not "tea party" types were expressing concern. "We had Cokie Roberts and Al Hunt, Steve Rattner. And Cokie and Al, not tea party patriots, absolutely shocked as am I what this Justice Department did, not only to the AP, but now to Fox News," Scarborough said during his interview with Chuck Todd of NBC. It's almost as if Eric Holder and Barack Obama never read the Pentagon Papers case. We've been having this fight for 200 years and they are talking about espionage?" Todd responded, "What's funny is I think candidate Obama if George Bush and Dick Cheney were doing this, imagine what candidate Obama would say. Candidate Obama would be unloading. There'd be a lot of Democrats that would be unloading on the administration if they were this and they were trying to crack down on leaks. Twin Scandals Sap Obama Credibility

Chris Stirewalt -- Fox News

When an official is found to have scrubbed talking points about the attack expressly to deny Republicans the opportunity to criticize the administration, it becomes clear that Obama was wrong when he said his administration was being forthcoming. It also opens the door to the next round of questioning about whether Obama and then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were willfully misinformed or willfully spreading misinformation. Neither is good. With reporters plenty embarrassed by having been badly burned by Team Obama on the Benghazi attacks, a new scandal comes into view: the deliberate targeting of conservative groups by the I.R.S. Just a few months ago, claims of a Benghazi cover up and the government hassling and intimidating the president's critics were dismissed as kooky. Now both have been revealed to be true. ...

Opinion: Liberal Media Spin Benghazi Scandal To Protect "Open And Transparent" Obama Administration

Dan Gainor -- Fox News

In the real world, when you cover up four murders after the fact, you likely go to jail. In government, you retire with dignity and run for president with full media support. Up until yesterday, that was the Benghazi scenario following the death of four Americans including our ambassador to Libya. The Obama administration has lied, stonewalled, bullied, and intimidated: the true marks of an open and transparent administration. And, with a few notable exceptions, the American media haven't just let them get away it; they've helped. Testimony of State Department whistleblowers might change that, but it's doubtful given the one-sided reporting so far. It doesn't really matter how they spin it, the news continues to get out. But if all major news outlets do is cover for the administration, they may well succeed in protecting their 2016 candidate.

Benjamin affirmed she believes the drone warfare is an impeachable offense. High Crimes And Misdemeanors: The Case For The Impeachment Of Barack Obama

Chelsea Schilling -- WND

Should Barack Hussein Obama, the 44th president of the United States, be impeached? It's not a question yet being asked or debated in the Big Media. But it is a question being addressed by some members of Congress, by an increasing number of pundits by activists on the left and the right -- and for more than one or two alleged constitutional offenses. Some of those who have broached the subject include Reps. Trent Franks, R-Ariz.; Walter Jones, R-N.C.; Trey Radel, R-Fla.; Steve Stockman; former Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas; former Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio; Fox News' Mike Huckabee; former assistant U.S. attorney Andrew McCarthy; left-leaning investigative reporter Dave Lindorff; talk-radio host Mark Levin; former House Speaker and presidential candidate Newt Gingrich; author and columnist Pat Buchanan and others. Article II, Section 4, of the U.S. Constitution states, "The President, Vice President and all civil officers of the United States, shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors." Court Rules Obama Recess Appointments Unconstitutional

David G. Savage -- Los Angeles Times

A federal appeals court, dealing a defeat to President Obama, has sharply limited the chief executive's power to bypass the Senate and to make temporary "recess" appointments to fill vacant slots in government agencies. The Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, in a 3-0 ruling, said the president can make recess appointments only when the Senate has formally adjourned between sessions of Congress, not when lawmakers leave Washington for a brief break. The Obama administration is almost certain to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court. But if the ruling stands, it strengthens the power of the Senate's Republican minority at the expense of Obama and the Democrats. ...

WND

Video AND TEXT. Paul said the guns scheme could help explain the reason for the coordinated attacks against the U.S. special mission and CIA annex in Benghazi last September. Paul said, "There is also some concern about whether or not Libyan arms are being ferried through Turkey into Syrian rebels and whether or not that had something to do with the cover-up that came out of the administration when the administration was saying that, 'Oh, this attack in Benghazi had something to do with a film. Overwhelming Evidence Shows Vote Fraud And Abuse Played Major Role In Outcome Of 2012 Election

James Simpson -- WND

Following Barack Obama's re-election, accusations from some quarters have held that his campaign stole the election through vote fraud. Others claim no vote fraud occurred, and that the election victory resulted from the Obama campaign's vastly superior get-out-the-vote effort. One RedState diarist has even gone so far as to announce that commenters complaining that the election was stolen will be banned from the site. With all of the swirling allegations, where does the truth lie? While there have been many proven cases of vote fraud in previous elections, and many credible allegations of fraud in this election cycle, was the cumulative total of all fraud sufficient to throw the election for Obama? After all, Obama's team ran an intensely focused, highly organized get-out-the-vote effort. Republican efforts were, by comparison, disorganized and nowhere near as comprehensive or sophisticated. Still, members of the president's team did everything possible to rig the game in their favor. They took liberties with the law Republicans would never dare attempt and obstructed voter-integrity efforts at every turn, while the vast political-media-entertainment-education-union-nonprofit complex went all in to promote Obama's narrative. Democrats and their media allies also engaged in what has fairly been described as a dishonest and "vicious" campaign to discredit the Republican nominee while steadfastly shielding the administration from its many scandals. Any of these could have sunk Obama's reelection prospects had the media reported them with the enthusiasm they showed in attacking and spreading disinformation about Romney. Herein, we examine those allegations with the greatest potential for skewing election results ...

Columbia Classmate Says "Obama Using IRS To Punish Me"

Art Moore -- WND

The former Libertarian Party vice presidential candidate who has claimed Barack Obama was unknown to him and his fellow Columbia University classmates charges the president is using the Internal Revenue Service to punish and silence him. Wayne Allyn Root -- a pre-law and political science major in the class of 1983, like the president -- said that despite a spotless tax record, he became the target of an audit in January 2011 when he received an "unsettling" call from an IRS agent who called himself a fan of his and considered it "an honor" to audit him. Root won a complete victory three months ago in tax court, which found no taxes owed in his 2007 and 2008 filings. But then, he said, something shocking happened -- something his tax attorney has never heard of in his entire career. Root was hit with a new audit just five days later, for 2009 and 2010. "That order had to come from the highest levels of government," he asserted. "Obama is using the power of the IRS and other government agencies to punish his political opposition and intimidate and silence his critics," Root charged. ...

Top Democrat Strategist Admits: "We Need Death Panels"

Aaron Klein -- WND

A top Democrat strategist and donor who served as President Obama's lead auto-industry adviser recently conceded that the rationing of heath services under Obamacare is "inevitable." Steven Rattner advocated that such rationing should target elderly patients, while stating, "We need death panels." Rattner serves on the board the New America Foundation, or NAF, a George Soros-funded think tank that was instrumental in supporting Obamacare in 2010. Soros' son, financier Jonathan Soros, is also a member of the foundation's board. Rattner was the so-called "car czar," the lead auto adviser to the Treasury Department under Obama. Last month, Rattner penned an opinion piece in the New York Times titled "Beyond Obamacare" in which he proclaimed "We need death panels" and argued rationing must be instructed to sustain Obama's health-care plan. His comments have been virtually ignored by traditional media as the president campaign's for a second term. ...

Chicago Gossip Columnist Kevin Dujan Claims Obama Hid "Gay Life" To Become President

DuJan, founder and editor of the Hillary Clinton-supporting website HillBuzz.org, said he has first-hand information from two different sources that "Obama was personally involved in the gay bar scene." Investigative journalist Wayne Madsen, who worked with the National Security Agency from 1984 to 1988 as a Navy intelligence analyst, confirmed DuJan's claims. ...

"Obama Eligibility Source" Could "Embarrass" U.S., U.K.

Jerome R. Corsi -- WND

Self-proclaimed international intelligence expert Michael Shrimpton plans to launch a vigorous defense on charges of making false claims to British government officials that a terrorist nuclear attack was under way during the 2012 Olympics in London, raising the possibility documents and testimony he plans to subpoena will embarrass the U.K., German and U.S. governments. Shrimpton, who faces a Nov. 10 trial, also appears in a 2008 video that began re-circulating earlier this year on the Internet in which he claims to have been privy to shocking intelligence information on Obama's origins. Shrimpton contends to this day that the CIA collected DNA from then-Sen. Obama and a grandparent establishes that Stanley Ann Dunham was not Obama's biological mother. He intends to subpoena from the CIA and British intelligence any records either agency may have on Obama's DNA. ...

Top Official In Obama Birth Mystery Killed

WND

Video AND TEXT. A key Hawaii official in the dispute over Barack Obama's birth certificate -- who lifted state restrictions to allow the White House to present the document to the public -- has died in a plane crash. Loretta Fuddy, the state health department director, was the only fatality among nine people aboard a Cessna Grand Caravan that went down at about 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday while heading to Honolulu. Richard Schuman, president of Makani Kai Air, told NBC that the other eight people aboard were rescued from the site of the water crash. ...

Another Challenge To Obama's Eligibility

Bob Unruh -- WND

A longstanding eligibility case challenging Barack Obama's presence in the White House soon could be headed to the state Supreme Court in Alabama, where one justice already in a court filing has questioned the authenticity of Obama's documentation, and the incoming chief justice is a dyed-in-the-wool Constitution supporter with little tolerance for those who want to bypass the document. The move is pending in an eligibility challenge brought by Hugh McInnish and others against the Alabama Secretary of State Beth Chapman. The case calls for a determination that Chapman "has a duty to verify the eligibility of those seeking office." ...

Lord Monckton Crunches Numbers On "Mistakes" In White House Birth Certificate: One In 62.5 Quintillion Against

WND

Entire books have been written about the problems with the "birth certificate" that was released by the White House purportedly documenting Barack Obama's birth in Hawaii. Computer imaging experts have found it to be fraudulent and the conclusion of an official law enforcement investigation assembled by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is that it is just not real. But it wasn't until now, through the work of the Christopher Monckton of Brenchley, that the world was informed just exactly what the odds are against all of those anomalies occurring naturally. One in 62,500,000,000,000,000,000. (That's 62.5 quintillion). The question at hand is whether Obama is constitutionally qualified for the office, under the Constitution's requirement that presidents be a "natural born citizen." ...

Rants & Raves from Our Readers

A reader who wishes to remain anonymous sent in this criticism:

Great news coverage. Too bad you market by exploitation of women and by increasing interest in our already broken sex saturated sex focused culture. Why not drop the rot and go for excellence. I had possibly considered financial support but not with your sex oriented lead headlines. Please consider a change.

Robert Jay March Responds:

Actually, I agree with you. The reason we put the "exploitation" articles in is that, since we began doing so, our traffic has gone up 30%, and with that, advertising revenue. Regretably, sex sells.
I am a disabled, home-bound journalist, and MarchReport.com is how I make my living. I must use any means to get traffic up in order to survive, even if I find the method(s) distasteful. Also, as I have been celibate for 15 years, I find these articles even more offensive than you do. I've experimented with removing them, and traffic goes way down. I have to do what I must to survive, both individually and as a daily web site news platform. Just skip over the articles you find offensive.

Reader Jacob Martin of North Carolina sent in this criticism:

In response to your editorial on BHO's birth certificate, you seem to end it by saying "Oh, well, let's just move on." This attitude is the reason our country is in the shape it is in. If we don't find out for sure and prosecute all involved, to include the "criminal-in-chief", and incarcerate them, then we have no excuse for any future fraud perpetuated on our nation. I've heard that the "government is scared to prosecute" because of the anarchy that will ensure from blacks, well, it's time to deal with that too. Every time something happens in this country and blacks don't like the outcome, they mob, riot, loot and destroy public and private property; and blacks are not alone, as the liberal "march on wall street" group are no better. Our founding fathers stood up for something and we as a nation are letting them, ourselves, and our future down. Liberals as a whole are destroying the very foundation of what this country stands for and it needs to stop now.

Robert Jay March Responds:

You need to read the Editorial again, as it seems you have missed the key point: I believe the birth certificate Obama released is real, and that the unflattened layers were left there as "red meat" for those unwilling to let it go. After stating that, I went on to discuss the "what if it's not" scenarios.
The Founding Fathers actually lived in world of despots and not-so-benelovent dictators; their courage was forged in that cauldron. The "leaders" of our country today are made of a weaker alloy, where freedom is the assumed norm. The axiom "freedom is not free" is lost on them; only those of us who are the children of Holocaust survivors and Iron Curtain escapees comprehend that it is not. If it turns out that the birth certificate is not real, there is no one in a position of authority who has the courage to act on it: absolutely no one. If the Supreme Court ever actually displayed to courage to hear this case, they'd simply issue another Bush v. Gore type of ruling, and would let Obama remain in office.
Your efforts would be better spent on seeing to it that he is not allowed to serve a second term.

A reader who wished to be referred to by the nom de plume "Great Granny Jane" wrote:

Hi, just wish to let you know how much I love your Report! And please,if possible do not stop ! I would be happy to help, financially, but am almost 90 yrs old, on an extremely limited income, but I will, if I ever have any extra, count on me to send you a wee bit!

Robert Jay March Responds:

While I welcome donations from those who are willing and able, the fact is that most readers do not donate, and that's fine. I'm delighted to have you as a reader. I thank you for your kind note, and congratulate you on your longevity.
